Millions at Risk as ‘Heat Dome’ Brings Extreme US Heat

A dangerous heat dome is causing record-high temperatures across the US Midwest and Northeast, raising risks of heat stroke and severe sunburn.

United States: Doctors are raising concerns about the warmer-than-usual weather sweeping across the US- whereby direct contact with such temperatures may cause severe and life-threatening health conditions.

More about the news

According to the US, it is in a heat dome, a scenario whereby the atmosphere traps hot air above certain places like the lid of a pot.

It is tearing up the Midwest and Northeast, being 100 degrees Fahrenheit in temperatures, and at temperatures as high as this one, heat stroke, a killer, can occur within 15 minutes.

However, temperature is just a portion of the equation, and the UV index should also be taken into consideration, DailyMail reported.

The ultraviolet index is an index of the intensity of sunburn generating ultraviolet radiations – it is how intense the UV rays of the sun are.

The greater the index, the more the power of the rays. The zero to two shows that there is a limited hazard of the sun, but an index of only three to five is risky, and it requires people to wear sun protection, including sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and sun-protective clothes.

A six or seven means a moderate probability of being damaged by nondominant exposure to sunshine.

The reading of 8-10 is very risky, and individuals can be burned within 10 minutes. Any value above 11 is highly risky, and fair-skinned people also face life-threatening burns in a matter of five minutes.

Individuals should remain indoors or not go out into the sun. And this summer – millions of Americans will be subjected to these mortally high quantities, as DailyMail reported.

The scale has no end since it is determined by what can burn people and can keep on growing as the temperatures grow and the beams of the sun get more intense.

The EPA predicts that all Americans are going to encounter severe temperatures during this summer.
